The English along with Wales Pitted Together for RWC 2027 in Australia

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The pool stage draw was overseen by rugby legends including two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

The English side together with their Welsh counterparts have been drawn in an identical group for the 2027 RWC, setting up a major pool stage clash in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Group F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and Zimbabwe.

This draw echoes their famous clash in the pool stages of the 2015 World Cup, where Wales' victory at England's home ground contributed to the English team's surprise early exit.

Key Group Draws

Ireland alongside Scotland also share a pool once again, just as the situation from the 2023 edition. On that occasion, they secured a convincing victory, with their opponents failing to progress to the quarter-finals.

Los Teros and Portugal, both impressed as underdogs in France, round out that Pool D.

Significantly, the winners of both Pool D and Pool F are kept apart from defending champions and world number one South Africa until the final, presuming the South Africans win their own group.

Tournament Ramifications

If the pools play out according to the current world rankings, other leading contenders like New Zealand and Les Bleus would also be kept apart from the likes of the English and the Irish all the way to the championship decider.

Under those circumstances, Los Pumas would be the remaining top-ranked nation on that side of the elimination bracket as those northern hemisphere teams.

Hosts Face Blockbuster Fixture

Hosts the Wallabies find themselves alongside their great rivals and three-time winners New Zealand in Pool A.

The Wallabies will kick off the tournament in the city of Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a marquee fixture designed to jump-start the competition.

Elsewhere, holders the Springboks have drawn Italy, Georgia and the Oaks. France are grouped with the Brave Blossoms, 2031 hosts the United States and Manu Samoa.

Larger Format for 2027

Los Pumas will face the Flying Fijians, Los Leones and the Canadian team as the World Cup expands to twenty-four nations from the 20 who competed in France.

The 2027 tournament will feature a round of 16 stage for the first time in Rugby World Cup history.

While the winner of England and Wales's group may avoid some of the game's biggest beasts initially, they will meet the runner-up from Pool B – most likely the Italians – in the last 16.

Four of the other six group winners will play a team that finished third from the initial group phase.
