RAF Typhoon jets have joined forces with French aircraft in a joint strike against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several access tunnels down to the facility... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established jihadist rule over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation shows our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of British forces who took part in this strike for their skill and their courage," Healey added. "They were among thousands of British personnel deployed over the holidays. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."

Last December, the American forces executed what it described as a "major assault" on IS targets in the country, after an ambush killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says IS still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in both countries.
