The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
